The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), through a series of analyses and negotiations about once every ten years, approves a group of peers comparable to each Virginia college and university against which to benchmark faculty salaries. The target for each Virginia institution’s overall faculty salary average is the 60th percentile of the average salaries of its peers. Criteria such as enrollments, academic program offerings and degrees awarded, research funding, and the classification of institutions of higher education developed by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education are used in the analysis to identify comparable peer institutions. Virginia Tech’s 25 SCHEV-approved peers are listed below.
In past years, the National Science Foundation (NSF) Survey of R&D Expenditures at Universities and Colleges has reported data for some multi-campus institutions at the aggregate level rather than the campus level. Beginning with the FY 2010 Higher Education R&D (HERD) Survey, NSF revised the reporting procedures to require survey responses from each geographically separate institution campus headed by a president or chancellor. The following report contains additional details about the revisions as well as Table C-1 which shows all institutional name changes between the FY09 and FY10 rankings, including the identification of individual campuses contained in previous "all-campus" aggregates.
